About Training at Southern Michigan Obedience Training Club

Your dog wants to please you but doesn’t know how. When he knows what is expected of him, he takes pleasure in obeying you. The most effective way to teach him is with obedience training.

Why not have the fun and satisfaction of training him yourself in SMOTC’s owner-handler training courses? Experienced SMOTC instructors will train you to teach your dog to sit, stay, heel, lay down, stand, and come to you on commands.

Praise and firmness accomplish this. Your dog will love the "work" because he has found out how to please you. Since standard obedience trial exercises are taught, you and your dog may even want to continue your training and compete in dog shows.

These classes are offered in schools and community centers. You enter the class by calling the location near you and registering for the class. You will need to bring to class your dog's up-to-date shot records. The only equipment required are a six foot leather leash and a slip-ring training collar. We will explain all of this in greater detail on your first night of class.

Southern Michigan Obedience Training Club has been helping this community train dogs since 1948. We are an AKC member club and teach the exercises in compliance with AKC’s standards. Our methods are approved by the Humane Society.

The Club is entirely made up of volunteers. We donate our time to help people like you train their dogs. We hope that you will enjoy this activity with your dog and will want to continue training and earning a title on your dog by entering obedience trials.

SMOTC hosts AKC Obedience Trials each fall.

SMOTC welcomes first-time exhibitors to participate in our personal, professional, and friendly trials.
